Southwest Airline vs Northwest Airline ou l’histoire d’un cas de Harvard
Bon c’est facile aujourd’hui Northwest Airlines (NWA) est en déroute et son concurrent géographique Southwest Airlines est plutôt en bonne forme, quelles en sont les raisons? (je ne vais pas prétendre y répondre mais apporter quelques informations)
Tout d’abord en introduction il faut savoir que Southwest est un cas étudié à Harvard Business School en terme de bonnes pratiques de management d’entreprise et ceci depuis de nombreuses années.Bon si l’on regarde les cours de ces 2 boîtes au Nasdaq rapidement on voit une différence :

Les courbes sont diamétralement opposées ceci depuis les 10 dernières années (les capitalisations boursières ne sont d’ailleurs pas les mêmes : 79 millions de $ pour Northwest et 80 milliards pour Southwest). Southwest Airlines began its service in 1971. Since then the killer-whale painted planes have become familiar to their customers and to corporate America. Besides being profitable, expanding constantly and defending its high place on the Fortune 500 list, Southwest has a very special trait: attitude (Bovier, 1993). The Southwest erspective stems from CEO Herb Kelleher and Southwest’s employee motivation.
The purpose of this article is to discover the sources of success of Southwest Airlines as a company with high employee motivation.
Three factors will be addressed:
(1) Southwest as an “excellent” company;
(2) the source of employee motivation in this “excellent” company; and
(3) whether lessons learned can adequately address potential future problems for Southwest.
